Julian - Technical Expertise & AI

| minute read
You started at Sopra Steria with a final-year internship and discovered several different roles within a short period of time. How did this journey lead you to specialize in AI?
I was fortunate to pursue a dual curriculum during my studies, which allowed me to deepen my knowledge of artificial intelligence, a field that has always been of particular interest to me. My first experiences at Sopra Steria then gave me the opportunity to discover different roles and project environments, while confirming my desire to specialize in AI. Today, I am glad to be able to apply my skills to a variety of projects and to share my expertise and knowledge with colleagues across Sopra Steria.

How has the integration of AI changed your day-to-day work as a developer?
The integration of AI has mainly changed the way I approach development. Today, I can spend more time understanding the actual need, defining the scope of the project, and thinking about the best way to address it, rather than focusing solely on writing code.

AI can assist us with many development tasks and help us work more efficiently, but we remain responsible for the quality of the outcome. It is not intended to replace developers, but rather to support them in their daily work by automating certain tasks and making problem-solving easier.

This is something I experience firsthand by using AI tools every day across my various projects: they allow me to be more productive while dedicating more time to understanding needs and focusing on the aspects that bring the most value.

How has your role as an AI technical lead changed the way you work and collaborate with others?
My role as an AI technical lead has mainly changed the way I work by placing greater emphasis on knowledge sharing, collaboration, and cross-functional teamwork. It involves supporting colleagues, introducing them to the tools made available by the Group, and advising them on how to use these tools depending on their needs and different client contexts.

This role also requires me to constantly stay up to date, as AI is evolving extremely quickly. I am learning every day myself, which enriches my exchanges with the teams and encourages me to regularly question and reassess my practices and knowledge.

Beyond the technical aspect, it has also helped me better understand the challenges and needs of the different roles I work with. I no longer think solely from a developer’s perspective: I also need to take into account the needs of Business Analysts, architects, project managers, and business teams. This gives me a more comprehensive view of projects and allows me to better identify situations where AI can truly bring value.

What excites you most about AI today and the possibilities it opens up for your profession?
There are many things that excite me about AI, but I have a particular interest in concrete use cases and in how these tools can be integrated into our daily work as developers, whether during development phases or directly within applications in production.

I also find it very interesting to follow the evolution of AI models, which are becoming increasingly powerful, more accessible, and less expensive to use. This evolution makes it possible to integrate AI into an ever-growing number of contexts and applications.

In my view, AI opens up a huge range of possibilities for our profession. It allows us to access the information we need more quickly, but also to delegate or automate certain tasks while still maintaining control over the outcome. This saves us valuable time and allows us to focus more on what truly brings value: understanding the need, designing the right solutions, and making the right decisions.
